Everything you need to know about numerology — how it works, what the numbers mean, and how to calculate your core numbers.
Numerology is a system of belief and practice that holds a meaningful relationship between numbers and events, personalities, and the flow of life itself. It is one of the oldest metaphysical disciplines — with roots tracing back to ancient Babylon, Egypt, and Greece. The philosopher Pythagoras, best known for his mathematical theorem, is widely credited with formalizing the Western numerological tradition around 500 BCE.
At its core, numerology operates on a single premise: every letter and every number carries a vibrational frequency, and those frequencies shape who you are and how your life unfolds. It is not fortune-telling. It is a framework for self-understanding.
Numerology derives meaning from two sources: your birth date and your birth name. From your birth date, it calculates your Life Path number — the most significant number in your chart, describing your overarching life purpose and natural tendencies. From your name, it calculates numbers like your Soul Urge (heart's desire) and Expression number (your natural talents and approach to the world).
All multi-digit numbers are reduced to a single digit by adding their digits together, repeating until you reach 1–9. The exceptions are 11, 22, and 33 — the Master Numbers, which are never reduced because they carry amplified vibrations.
Take your full birth date (month, day, and year) and reduce each component to a single digit. Then add those digits together and reduce again. Example: born March 14, 1990 → Month: 3 → Day: 1+4=5 → Year: 1+9+9+0=19, 1+9=10, 1+0=1 → Life Path: 3+5+1=9.
Stop reducing if you hit 11, 22, or 33 — those are Master Numbers and should not be reduced further.
Your Soul Urge (also called Heart's Desire) comes from the vowels in your full birth name. Assign each vowel its Pythagorean value (A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3), sum all the vowel values, and reduce to a single digit or Master Number.
Numerology is a reflective tool, not a predictive algorithm. Most people who explore their numbers seriously report a strong resonance — not because the universe runs on arithmetic, but because the archetypes embedded in each number map reliably onto real human patterns. Use it as a mirror, not a map.
